Songs for a Broken Nation

Hey there. Like many of you, I am heartbroken and devastated by the results of this week’s U.S. presidential election — and several other key races. In this time, we need to build communities and do what we can to fight for those marginalized and endangered by what’s to come. Now is definitely not the time to give up. We need to keep fighting for progress. My instantaneous reaction was to retreat into music. Again, I’m not much of a live performer, but I felt these songs were important right now. “You and Me Against the World” was written during the first Trump administration and, although it was initially influenced by an article I read about the horrors of the November 2018 wildfire that hit Paradise, Calif., it wound up becoming a song about resiliency and overcoming personal and external conflicts. “Looking for the Light” was written in early 2022 when I was hopeful that the fascist threat to this nation was subsiding…only to learn this week it has only gotten way, way worse.
